Hardwood · Meranti · Malaysia
Meranti — Malaysia. The hardwood middle ground.
Sourced from Malaysia's managed hardwood forests, Meranti sits between softwood pricing and premium hardwood performance — a reddish timber that takes finishes cleanly and resists warping far better than most softwoods it competes with on cost.
Why Malaysian Meranti holds up so well
Meranti is harvested from a family of related Shorea species grown across Malaysia's managed forest concessions, which gives it a fairly consistent reddish-brown colour and moderate density across a shipment. It machines cleanly, holds screws and fixings well, and doesn't split easily during installation — practical qualities that matter as much as appearance for contractors working to a schedule.
Where it’s used
Its balance of workability and weather resistance makes Meranti the default recommendation for doors, window frames, and general joinery where solid hardwood is needed but full teak pricing isn't justified. It also finishes well for interior furniture components.
