Nyatoh — Malaysia. Fine grain, furniture-ready.
A close relative of Meranti in Malaysia's hardwood family, Nyatoh brings a finer, tighter grain and a smoother finish — the timber contractors reach for when a project needs a mahogany-like look without mahogany pricing.
What sets Nyatoh apart from Meranti
Nyatoh comes from the Palaquium species group, grown across the same Malaysian forest regions as Meranti but prized for a finer, more even grain texture and a slightly deeper reddish-brown tone. It sands to a smoother finish and is a common substitute where a mahogany-style look is wanted at a more accessible price point.
Where it’s used
Nyatoh's fine grain and clean finish make it a favourite for furniture components, cabinetry, and decorative joinery — anywhere the visible grain matters as much as structural performance. It's less commonly used for heavy structural work than Meranti.
